Tue Oct 21 2008 After building over 30 packages as SAW gains momentum towards an 0.4 release I came to a realization: there isn't much point on building yet another set of packages for a "do-it-all" DAW. It's already been done (and done well) by PlanetCCRMA and 64Studio. I decided instead that SAW would be a better project if it did things a bit differently. SAW 0.4 is going to be a major regression. I'm going to submit all of my buildscripts to SlackBuilds.org. From here on out, the SAW project is going to provide a set of "core" packages that provide a proper environment for a DAW (such as the kernel with realtime patches, rtirq, set_rlimits, das_watchdog, etc) and instructions on how to build a DAW that suits your needs using these core packages and SlackBuilds.org. I'm also working on renovating the wiki, which will clarify things a bit and give the project a more defined direction. Stay tuned... Sun Oct 19 2008 Slackware Audio Workstation 0.3 is out! This is a maintenance and bugfix release. The biggest change is that libfreebob has been replaced by libffado. This 0.3 release marks the "stable" set of core packages on which further packages will be built. As with previous releases there is a README file under the release directory on the repository that contains basic installation instructions, however the instructions on the SAW wiki are recommended as they are more thorough and contain some additional information. Tue Oct 14 2008 Time for an 0.2 release! Today also brings the introduction of the SAW wiki! To install SAW 0.2, install all the packages from the 0.1 repo directory except set_rlimits. Then install all the packages from the 0.2 repo directory. SAW 0.2 fixes a small bug that existed in the set_rlimits package from 0.1 and adds the ever-useful JACK and qjackctl, as well as alsa-tools. Also new in 0.2 is libfreebob, providing better firewire device support. Information on getting SAW set up is all documented in the wiki, so enjoy! Sun Oct 12 2008 The Slackware Audio Workstation (SAW) has officially been launched! Right now you'll find the kernel with realtime preemption patches and a few utilities that make for a nice "realtime environment", and that's all you're going to get for version 0.1 :) |
